The managing director of a nursing college, a nurse, a tattoo artist, and an autorickshaw driver are among the seven people who were recently arrested as the Karnataka Police cracked down on a gang selling babies in the state’s Tumakuru district.

The gang allegedly sold newborn babies for about Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh and of the nine babies sold, five have been rescued, the police said on Wednesday.

According to police sources, the gang used to identify childless couples and target unwed mothers or women who got pregnant following extramarital affairs. They allegedly took the pregnant women to a hospital, created fake birth certificates once the babies were born, and then sold them.

The police identified the arrested accused as U D Mahesh, 39, the managing director of a nursing college in Tumakuru; Mehaboob Shariff, 52, a pharmacist at a government Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Goobehalli in Tumakuru district; Poornima, 39, a staff nurse at a government PHC in Dodderi; Soujanya, a staff nurse in Shira government hospital; K N Ramakrishnappa, 53, a tattoo artist; Hanumatharaju, 45, a resident of Tumakuru town; and Mubarak Pasha, 44, an autorickshaw driver who had purchased a child.

The police zeroed in on the gang after a couple approached them on June 9 and reported the loss of their 11-month-old baby while they were sleeping near a temple. A special police team went in search of the baby and arrested Ramakrishnappa and Hanumatharaju.
