Student saves dumped newborn girl from dog

Trichy: An alert college student saved a newborn girl with her umbilical cord intact from a dog that was dragging the plastic bag in which she had been dumped near the Thiruvappur railway gate in Pudukkottai on Friday afternoon.
Police said the college student from the locality saw a dog pull a plastic bag from a garbage dump and saw it dragging the bag. Growing suspicious, the student chased the animal away and checked the bag and found the baby that would be only a few hours old. The student then alerted residents who cleaned the infant and informed the authorities.
Child welfare officials rushed to the spot with a 108 ambulance and shifted the baby to the Raniyar Government Reproductive and Child Health Hospital. Hospital sources said the baby's condition is stable.
The Thirukokarnam police registered a case and launched an investigation to identify the parents and determine who abandoned the baby. The authorities have appealed to the public for any information that could help trace those responsible.
