Abandoned newborn: Minor mom traced, 27-yr-old man held

Barwani: The police have traced mother of a newborn girl, who was found abandoned in a field under Palsud police station area of Barwani. The mother, who is a minor, claimed she was exploited by a 27-year-old man, who was arrested by the police.

Palsud police station in-charge Sukhlaal Bhanwar told TOI that a newborn girl was found lying in severe cold in a field on Dec 17. A case was registered against unknown persons and the police had started searching for her mother, who eventually turned out to be a 17-year-old girl. During questioning, she said that she had come in contact with a 27-year-old man identified as Anil while working as a labourer. The minor said that Anil promised to marry her and, on that pretext, exploited her sexually many times. She claimed she became aware of her pregnancy only at an advanced stage. Subsequently, Anil refused to take responsibility, stopped meeting her, and ater fled to Maharashtra after the delivery.

"The girl said that the delivery was conducted at home with the assistance of her mother. Fearing social stigma and complications in future marriage of her unmarried daughter, the  mother decided to abandon the newborn in a nearby field," the police station in-charge said.

Police arrested Anil from Maharashtra and produced him in court on Wednesday from where he was sent to judicial custody. Investigation revealed that Anil was already married and has three children, said the police station in-charge. A case was also registered against the minor girl and her mother for abandoning the newborn. They were, however, released after being served notices of appearance. Since neither the minor nor her mother was willing to accept the child, the newborn has been kept under care at district hospital. TNN
